For online shopping it is important to display products for prospective customers. Interactive 3D gives the client the opportunity to examine the product fully from all angles. In addition, the customer can be given the ability to customize the the product by selecting from various options. In this example, the color of the leather and the type of metal can be selected by pressing buttons at the bottom of the window.

The bag can be rotated by dragging the mouse with the left button down. Zoom in and out can be done with the mouse wheel. Change the colors of the bag and the metal hardware by pressing the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Virtual Shopping

Although the example here illustrates a handbag, clearly any product can be displayed in this way. Instead of having the buttons on the control panel change the colors, the buttons could also be used to initiate animation, such as showing how to open part of the model, or illustrate how to make a repair to the model. Enhancing the virtual shopping experience increases the likelihood of a sale.

Enhanced X3D Technology

The control panel of this example uses the Layout and Layering components that are in the recent version 3.2 of the X3D specification. Together they add the ability to create an interface through which the user can interact with the 3D scene. The technical details concerning the use of these components will be discussed later in a article in the tutorial section of this website.
